This year at the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival (my day job) the subject of the discussion is 'Poetry & Disobedience'. We were brainstorming questions only this afternoon. The thing is, you can't really be obedient as a writer. You have to write the things you want to, reject the clichés and be prepared to break a few rules along the way.
Mollie had to make a list of 10 things that her life in Stratford St Mary involved. ‘Not wear dresses or skirts’ was when it all came alive. She subsequently wrote a poem based around that list and all the way through it she's gently bending the rules but the tone is never nasty. We were also writing about 'now' too, what can only happen at this time of year. So I do like those geese in the sky and at night, over your house, they would be annoying wouldn't they?
THE NEVER ENDING DAY
The sweets that I have from my sweetie tin
when Mum’s not looking (Crunchies, Mars bars and Haribos).
The geese that go over my house at night
ever so annoying.
The play park near the dark scary woods.
Hiding behind the sofa before school
playing on the ipad whilst Mum is calling me
saying We’re going to be late!
I put on my school clothes. I refuse to wear
any skirts or dresses.
Slipping my school shoes off
under the table throughout the day.
I read until 9 in bed (although Mum says
I can only read till 8.30) and then slowly
drifting off to sleep.
